Within a 2-mile radius on San Antonio’s far Northwest Side, at least four tower cranes have been erected where three new hospitals are being built.

New acute-care medical facilities are under construction or planned across one of the fastest-growing areas of the city even as others, like the Nix Hospital downtown and the Texas Vista Medical Center on the South Side, have shut their doors in recent years.

At Christus Santa Rosa Westover Hills, workers with Skanska are building a new five-level tower that will expand the existing hospital’s bed capacity and emergency department.

Located at State Highway 151 and Westover Link, the Christus Health-owned hospital opened in 2009 and expanded in 2021. The new addition under construction, a $95 million project, according to state filings, will connect to the main hospital.

A spokeswoman for Christus Health said she could not provide any other details on the expanding footprint of the nonprofit hospital system in the northwest corridor.

But the project signals an emerging and growing medical center on the far Northwest Side.

It’s no match yet for the 900-acre South Texas Medical Center and its 75 medically related facilities in Northwest San Antonio, including the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

But the number of health facilities in Westover Hills and near the booming Alamo Ranch area continues to expand, matching a similar pattern in Stone Oak in the 1990s.

At Loop 1604 and Wiseman Road, another construction crane is posted at a 72-acre site of a new Baptist Health System campus that will include medical office buildings, an ambulatory surgical center and an acute care hospital.

The $135.5 million project is expected to be completed early next year.

Tucked into a corner of Loop 1604 and State Highway 151, another site has been cleared and work begun on Methodist Healthcare’s new campus where a medical office building is going up.

The planned four-story structure will house various medical specialties and an imaging center. A third of the 74-acre campus will remain undeveloped as habitat for the area’s natural wildlife. The estimated $125 million project is expected to be complete in mid-2024.

There are now 27 major acute-care hospitals in San Antonio. Take a look at the map to see where they are located, the ownership and how many inpatient beds are provided in each facility.
