James P. Sullivan was appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott to fill Justice Jimmy Blacklock’s position on the Texas Supreme Court when Blacklock was appointed chief justice in 2025. Sullivan grew up in Austin, clerked on the D.C. Circuit, served in the Office of the Solicitor General, and worked as a litigator in private practice. He is now seeking his first full term on the court and faces one Democratic challenger in November.
