Please tell voters about yourself.

I was born and raised in SAISD D3 where I attended Kate Schenck Elementary, Rogers Middle School and graduated from Highlands High School. I’m a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and Afghanistan. I currently have a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Texas A&M University-San Antonio. I am running for SAISD Board Trustee District 3 because as the son of two retired educators, the most important piece of advice I received from my parents when I started my family is to be an advocate for my children. As a current SAISD parent, I’ve learned that every student deserves an advocate to speak up for them and as a board trustee my goal will be to help parents and community members come together to support our students, teachers, and school workers because our students’ education is the foundation of the future.

List any previous experience in the community or in the education field, such as participation in parent teacher associations, local boards and commissions or neighborhood associations.

I currently volunteer at my son’s school. I’m also a member of the SAISD Budget Committee and the co-chair to the Highland Hills Neighborhood Association Scholarship Committee.  I have not run for any elected office before.

If elected, you’ll likely be facing a budget deficit and the possibility of funding hamstrung by the state. How would you approach these issues? Where should the district turn to save money if needed?

San Antonio ISD has already implemented a series of budget cuts. As trustee, I will make sure that we are approaching our budget deficit through a framework that prioritizes our students and staff. The real issue is that we are being starved of resources at the state level despite Texas having a $29 billion budget surplus. I’ve already been to the Texas Capitol this legislative session, alongside SAISD teachers and support staff, to talk to our elected officials about the importance of more school funding. District 3 deserves a trustee that will fight for them.

What do you think the district’s biggest challenges are in the coming years, and what should be the board’s top areas of focus?

The district’s biggest challenges in coming years will be school vouchers. We need to prepare now and be proactive to have a plan now in place for if it happens. Our district cannot afford to wait to come up with a plan because of the impact it will have. School vouchers will affect many areas of our district including our budget and enrollment, but it will put our most vulnerable students at risk of losing resources they depend on.
