At 6:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, most of the city was just waking up from a cold and rainy night, but Mayor Ivy Taylor was ordering several dozen tacos from Mittman Fine Foods in Eastside San Antonio with a mission: to deliver the holiest upon holy to Austin Mayor Steve Adler at the downtown Hilton Hotel in Austin.

The seemingly never-ending dispute and all-out breakfast taco war between Austin and San Antonio has ended, at least for today. Mayor Steve Adler and Mayor Ivy Taylor, represented the neighboring cities, finally met Thursday to settle the breakfast taco war with a Tex-Mex throw down. And Mayor Taylor came with backup. Mariachi Los Calleros let the voice of San Antonio be heard in downtown Austin.
The choice in tacos were left to the mayors discretion, as long as the tacos contained bacon and egg. Taylor chose tacos from Mittman Fine Foods on San Antonio’s Eastside, while Mayor Adler opted for a taco from Juan in a Million.
Despite the horrendous traffic along the I-35 corridor, Mayor Taylor arrived to the hotel on time, but her counterpart and neighboring colleague did not. The urge for breakfast was too great for Taylor, who snuck to the back of the room and delicately peeled back the foil of her taco offerings, revealing a corn tortilla, hidden beneath the shiny crinkly wrapping. “I’m a breakfast gal.” she said. “I need this.”

Though both sides may have hoped to see name calling and an inevitable breakfast taco food fight, the day actually ended with a hand shake and a signed proclamation of an official “Breakfast Taco Day” in Austin. Fortunately, we all know that everyday is “taco day” in San Antonio, and it’s not just for breakfast.
It was cute while it lasted, but the real challenge comes tomorrow when local Westside San Antonio Chef Johnny Hernandez takes on an Austin chef yet-to-be-named in a breakfast taco war during the ChooseSA SXSW event.

Juan in a Million doesn’t even make their own tortillas. It was over before it ever began.
Why in the hell did she choose to go to Mittman? That was a stupid move.
Juan in a million is overrated. Don’t even think they make their own tortillas.
Of all the taco places in San Antonio? Not even the ones we’re famous for.. Rolando’s…Taco Taco…
Mittman Fine Foods may make the best breakfast tacos in the city, but I’d still rather eat them in the neighborhood and not after they’ve been in a car for an hour.
Juan in a million is definitely a better name…
What overpaid, undercultured staffer sent her there?
Missy Quintela taco wars! lol
I feel as if the mayor let the city of SA down. Not only tacos from a place that most people don’t even know about, but bacon and egg on corn tortillas? Come on!
so, gentrified vs gentrified?
Peace in our times.
Is this a real story. Like did someone really spend time writing this? Hahahahaha
This is pretty ridiculous. There are far more important things the mayor should be doing.
These are both terrible choices. Could there be a ‘real’ taco throw down organized by the people of the city as a part of a taco festival so that each city can send representatives from the respective people’s choice?
Angela Maria
Great way to spend our tax dollars. Thanks Mayor!!
Seems like the mayor needs to appoint a taco advisor to her staff, taco ombudsman?
Very very lame!!! Really really really embarrassing!!!!!!!!!!so wrong lame and embarrassing!!!!!!omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!never live this down
Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame!
This is rediculous
Oh come on! Lighten up here. Where is the “FESTIVE” fun spirit that San Antonians are known for? Some of you commenters need to go have a taco already.
And, every resident of San Antonio has the right to claim their favorite taco joint, even if it’s NOT one that we’re famous for. HAPPY FRIYAYYYY!!
Oh, look, another scenario where SA leadership thinks they have to prove themselves to the cut-rate Berkeley/Williamsburg wannabe up the Interstate.
You want to make SA great? Step one: Stop doing this.
I’ve never really heard of or been to Mittmans. Interesting choice.
