Pat Frost, who will step down from his position as president of Frost Bank at the end of 2023, has joined the San Antonio Report’s board of directors.

Frost, the great-great-grandson of Frost Bank’s founder, began his career in the mailroom in 1976 as a high school student, sorting customer bankcard statements. He went on to hold leadership roles in commercial lending, marketing, wealth management, insurance and retail banking before becoming president.

He has leavened his financial services career with a deep commitment to civic engagement. His current roles include chair of the NCAA 2025 Men’s Final Four Local Organizing Committee and serving on the boards of Christus Santa Rosa Hospital, the Texas Cultural Trust, the Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio, the Texas Business Hall of Fame, San Antonio Sports and the San Antonio Livestock Exposition.

Frost’s civic honors include membership in the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame, Alamo Heights Independent School District Hall of Fame and United Way Volunteer of the Year for Family Service.

He said he added the San Antonio Report board to his portfolio because “I believe in the cause.” Journalism is critical, he said, for people to stay abreast of what’s happening in their community. And the more sources of news a community has the better, he said: “Competition is a wonderful thing.”

Frost said San Antonio Report board member Wayne Alexander, retired president of SBC Southwestern Bell, encouraged him to consider joining. “And I am a big Wayne Alexander fan,” Frost said.

San Antonio Report Publisher and CEO Angie Mock said the Frost family’s “long history of civic engagement in San Antonio and Pat’s deep knowledge of budgets and finance will be a positive force on our board as we work hard each day at building a sustainable newsroom to cover our community for years to come.”

San Antonio Report board Chairman A.J. Rodriguez welcomed Frost to the board of the nonprofit news organization.

“I’ve known Pat for 25 years, beginning with the friendship we developed at the Greater Chamber. Throughout that time, I’ve witnessed his dedication to all things San Antonio. He will bring a lifetime of business experience and knowledge to our already strong team,” Rodriguez said.

Recently appointed members include Chris Rosas, vice president of finance for Bumble, and Joe Ruiz, managing editor for CBS News, both of whom joined the board last month. Michelle Lugalia-Hollon, a former policy director with the mayor’s office and the first chief strategy officer for San Antonio Growth for the Eastside (SAGE), was appointed in January.

Marina Alderete Gavito was also named to the board in January, but she resigned before attending her first meeting after deciding to run for the District 7 City Council seat.

The board oversees the work of the San Antonio Report, a 501(c)3 nonprofit.

“Our board of directors is comprised of dedicated community leaders who care deeply about the role that independent, local news plays in our democracy,” said Mock. “We are excited to have Pat’s talent, expertise and passion in furthering our mission.”

Tracy Idell Hamilton worked as an editor and business reporter for the San Antonio Report from 2021 through 2024.
