The U.S. Department of Education awarded Our Lady of the Lake University a $3 million grant to expand postgraduate opportunities for Hispanic students.
OLLU also will use the funding to increase the number of South Texas students in the teaching and therapy professions.
The grant will span five years, giving the university $600,000 annually. The funds will enable OLLU to offer a master’s program in teaching in San Antonio and its campus in the Rio Grande Valley, expand an existing master’s program in psychology in marriage and family therapy to the Rio Grande Valley, develop a family therapy clinic in the Rio Grand Valley, update classrooms to expand technology for shared classes across OLLU’s three campuses, and create a graduate student center.
Our Lady of the Lake University has campuses in San Antonio, Houston, and La Feria, near Harlingen in the Rio Grande Valley.
“We are excited to provide more post-baccalaureate opportunities for students on all three of our campuses,” OLLU President Diane Melby said. “Of the 1,730 graduate students enrolled in Fall 2018, 45 percent were Latinx and 40 percent were first generation.
“This grant will enable our students to serve and improve communities facing great need.”
