Terri Williams, the vice president of the North East Independent School District’s board of trustees, has died. She was 59.

Board President Shannon Grona said in a statement Monday that the death follows “a longtime illness.”

“Terri was committed to our community and to the students of North East ISD,” Grona said. “As an economic and development professional, Terri brought a wealth of knowledge and experience into our discussions.”

Williams moved to San Antonio when she was 5 years old and came from a family of educators. Her mother taught in the San Antonio Independent School District and her father taught chemistry at Texas Southern University in Houston.

According to a district profile, Williams held a degree in political science from UTSA and an Economic Development Certification from the International Economic Development Council.

She served on the Bond Steering Committee for three years, and was also a member of the NEISD Citizens’ Bond Advisory Committee.

Under state law, the board may either appoint a replacement to fill the District 2 vacancy or order a special election to fill the vacancy for the unexpired term.

A district spokeswoman said it was too soon to say which option would be used to fill the seat. A board meeting was scheduled for Monday at 5 p.m.
