Months after trustees approved a historic raise for North East Independent School District teachers and staff, they updated the contract of Superintendent Sean Maika to reflect that increase and extended his contract by a year.

Under the new contract, Maika will serve until June 2028 and make $309,186.00 annually, according to a copy of the updated contract posted on the district’s website.

The vote followed a lengthy executive session Monday, in which trustees discussed Maika’s evaluation, which is confidential under state law, and other district business.

Board President Shannon Grona cited that confidentiality when she declined to go into details about the evaluation, but told the San Antonio Report that Maika “continues to meet and/or exceed expectations of the board, so that is why the contract was extended.”

Maika, who was named a “superintendent to watch” by the National School Public Relations Association last year, began his role in an interim position in 2019 after serving as part of the professional staff for more than a decade.

According to the most recent Texas Education Agency data, Maika is among the top five highest earning district leaders in Bexar County, with Northside Independent School District’s John Craft earning the most at $350,000.

Isaac Windes covered education for the San Antonio Report from 2023 to 2024.
