The San Antonio Spurs’ newest team member is no rookie to the sidelines.

The Spurs announced the hiring of Jacob Tobey as its new TV play-by-play announcer on Thursday. Tobey will join veteran commentator and former Spurs player Sean Elliott in the broadcast booth for the upcoming season.

His San Antonio debut is when the Spurs kick off their NBA preseason this upcoming Monday against the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Frost Bank Center.

Tobey fills the role left vacant by longtime announcer Bill Land, who recently announced his retirement.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Jacob to the Spurs family,” said Mike Kickirillo, senior director of broadcast for the Spurs. “His passion for the game, combined with his broadcast experience and holistic sports knowledge, make him a perfect fit for our team. We’re confident that Spurs fans will quickly embrace Jacob’s energy and insightful commentary.”

A native of Sandwich, Mass., Tobey has served as a weekend sports anchor at 9NEWS in Denver since 2020, and has also worked as a play-by-play announcer for various sports networks, including Fox Sports and the PAC-12 Network.

A 2018 graduate of Suffolk University, Tobey’s early career included internships with the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots. Prior to that, he was the weekend sports anchor at KJRH-TV in Tulsa, where he covered the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, University of Tulsa and the Thunder.

In addition to his broadcasting career, Tobey is an advocate for his Native American heritage, stemming from the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe (also known as the People of the First Light). This tribe has inhabited present-day Massachusetts and Eastern Rhode Island for more than 12,000 years.
