Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito (D7) won a second term representing City Council District 7 on Saturday night taking nearly 72% of the vote.

The former tech executive emerged from a crowded race in 2023 to represent this near West Side district, which has been a political launchpad for council members in the past.

Ed Garza and Julián Castro each went on to serve as mayor, and Castro was later tapped to serve as the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary during the Obama Administration. Bexar County Commissioner Justin Rodriguez (Pct. 2) held the seat for two terms and went to the state Legislature before his current role.

Alderete Gavito, whose father Joe Alderete served on the City Council in the early 1980s, brought a loaded corporate resume and endorsements from pro-business groups in her first race.

She spent much of her first term focused on addressing problems at the city’s Animal Care Services Department.

Alderete Gavito drew just two challengers this year, including one that shares her last name.

Deep Grace Ministries CEO Cynthia Lugo Alderete took 21.2% and Trinity Haddox, a first-time political candidate and stay-at-home dad, took 7.2%.
