Commissioner Grant Moody (Pct. 3), a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Reserves, has been called up to active duty due to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran in the Middle East.
Moody will support Marine Forces Central Command staff in planning and operations at their headquarters in Tampa, Florida, according to his office.
He’s headed to MacDill Air Force Base for the next 45 days and will continue to serve on the Bexar County Commissioners Court remotely.
“I am honored to serve my country as a member of the Marine Reserves and I’m committed to fulfilling my duties to both my country and my community,” Moody said in a statement. “I have a very responsive and capable team and have full faith and confidence in their ability to serve county residents.”
His call to active duty comes as Israel launched a massive attack on Iran’s nuclear program last week, and Iran has retaliated with drone strikes and hundreds of missile strikes.
President Donald Trump has hinted at potential U.S. military intervention on behalf of Israel.
Moody, a Marine pilot who served combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, traveled to Israel in January of last year as part of a solidarity mission during Israel’s war with Hamas.
The trip was sponsored by the American Israel Education Foundation, and Moody delivered a proclamation from Bexar County to stand with Israel.
Moody was supposed to travel to Tel Aviv this year as part of an economic development mission with leaders of Greater:SATX, but the trip was postponed due to unrest.
“The state of Israel has tremendous potential as an economic partner for Bexar County, and the city of San Antonio,” Moody said at the time. “I think there is natural synergies when it comes to cyber, aerospace.”
