Geekdom is inviting entrepreneurs, startup founders and the startup-curious to check out its new headquarters on the third floor of the Rand building on Wednesday for its latest Startup Day.
The newly renovated third floor gives Geekdom 12,000 square feet of additional space and includes a coffee shop, community space, dedicated desks for co-working members and a podcast studio.
The startup incubator already occupies the sixth, seventh and eighth floors of the downtown building and previously housed its headquarters on the seventh floor. Geekdom’s expansion comes on the heels of the opening of another co-working space downtown, Common Desk.
Geekdom’s quarterly Startup Days, which offer programming, workshops and networking, are free for participants, who are encouraged to register.
This Startup Day, which will include tours of the new space, kicks off with the popular 1 Million Cups event from Launch SA, which Geekdom now oversees.
1 Million Cups is a national program that connects small businesses over coffee and has been one of the most popular offerings at Launch SA, said Director Matthew Espinoza. Each Wednesday, two small business owners or startup founders present their business to others like them, who in turn offer feedback.
“It’s a great way to introduce Launch SA to a new audience every week, and at the same time let business owners connect with one another and hang out in the space,” he said.
Espinoza said the event attracts 20 to 30 people each week. Normally held at Launch SA’s location inside the downtown library, the March 6 event will be held at the Geekdom Event Centre at 131 Soledad St., at 9 a.m. Registration is encouraged.
Closing out the day, Geekdom will host its Incubator Showcase at 1803 Broadway from 6-8 p.m. featuring the 14 companies currently in its eight-week program that helps early-stage entrepreneurs and first-time founders grow their startup ideas into viable businesses.
