Michael McFaul, former U.S. ambassador to Russia and one of America’s leading voices on diplomacy and democracy, will deliver the 2025 Maverick Lecture. The event will occur on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Stieren Theater. McFaul will present “Autocrats vs. Democrats: China, Russia, America, and the New Global Disorder.”
The Maverick Lecture is generously underwritten by the William and Salomé Scanlan Foundation, ensuring that Maury Maverick’s legacy of championing civil rights and justice lives on.
“A poet, a journalist, and a lawyer walked into a bar … and the result was the Maverick Lecture Series at Trinity University,” said William “Bill” Scanlan Jr., son of William and Salomé. “I’m grateful for that meeting with writers Naomi Shihab Nye and Jan Jarboe Russell for sharing their dream of the Maverick Lecture.”
McFaul is one of America’s foremost voices on diplomacy, democracy, and global affairs. A Montana native turned Rhodes Scholar, McFaul has spent his career navigating the frontlines of international politics. He served as U.S. ambassador to Russia during one of the most volatile periods in recent history and was a key architect of the Obama administration’s Russia policy.
Before and after his time in government, McFaul built a distinguished academic career at Stanford University, where he is now the Ken Olivier and Angela Nomellini Professor of International Studies and director of the Freeman Spogli Institute. As a scholar, New York Times bestselling author, and NBC News analyst, McFaul is known for translating complex global events into accessible, urgent insights. His upcoming book, “Autocrats vs. Democrats“ delves into the escalating struggle between authoritarian regimes and democratic ideals.
The Maverick Lecture, named in honor of the late Maury Maverick Jr., a legendary civil rights lawyer, Texas legislator, Marine, and outspoken newspaper columnist, continues to be a platform for exploring topics that reflect Maverick’s dedication to American civic discourse.
“In these uncertain times, Trinity University and The Maverick Lecture Series are most fortunate to have Michael McFaul as the 2025 Maverick Lecture speaker,” Bill said.
