Councilman Clayton Perry (D10) broke his silence Wednesday on the hit-and-run accident he was reportedly involved in Sunday night.

He’s been absent from public events since then, missing Council’s regular meeting Wednesday afternoon.

“I was in a car crash on Sunday,” Perry said in a prepared statement. “I clearly hit my head and don’t really remember it.”

A San Antonio police officer found Perry lying in his backyard Sunday night, smelling of alcohol while a vehicle was still running in the driveway, according to a police report obtained by KSAT.

Police are investigating his connection to a hit-and-run that occurred earlier that night at the intersection of Jones Maltsberger and Redland Road. It was not clear whether Perry or someone else was driving the vehicle, according to KSAT’s report. Perry told the officer he wasn’t driving that night.

The police officer on the scene called for medical help, but Perry declined treatment.

“The next morning, I went to the doctor and spent a day and a half at [Brooke Army Medical Center] for treatment and observation,” Perry said in a statement sent to reporters from a personal email account. “I’m very sorry for the hassle this is causing everyone and I’m fully cooperating with everyone to resolve it properly.”

KSAT reported that Perry was not being investigated for a DWI.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg said that if the details in the police report are correct, Perry should resign from his council seat. Perry is serving his third two-year term.
