As families settle into a new school year, fall is the perfect time for kids to get moving, try something new, and build friendships along the way. At the YMCA of Greater San Antonio, youth sports give children the opportunity to develop athletic skills while also learning teamwork, confidence, sportsmanship LOSE COMMA and what it means to be part of a team.
And there’s still time to get into the game.
Late registration is now underway through Sept. 1, followed by last call registration from Sept. 1 through Oct. 2. Families interested in participating this fall are encouraged to register soon, as space may be limited by sport and YMCA location.
New ways to play this fall
This season, the Y is expanding its youth sports lineup with NFL flag football at the Mays Family YMCA at Stone Oak, Mays Family YMCA at Potranco, O.P. Schnabel Park, and Cibolo Family YMCA.
The no-contact program introduces young athletes to football fundamentals while emphasizing teamwork, skill development, and sportsmanship in a positive, supportive environment.
The Harvey E. Najim Family YMCA is also kicking off a new season of youth soccer for children ages 3–9. With a new soccer pitch now available at the Y, young players have another chance to learn the game, practice new skills, and build confidence on the field.
More than a game
Winning may be exciting, but YMCA youth sports are designed for something bigger. Programs emphasize character development, positive coaching LOSE COMMA and creating an environment where every child has an opportunity to participate and belong. Whether a child is playing a sport for the first time or returning for another season, YMCA coaches work to help young athletes grow both on and off the field.
For families, youth sports can also create a stronger sense of community by bringing together children, parents and volunteers from neighborhoods across Greater San Antonio.
Volunteer coaches make it possible
The YMCA is also calling on the community to help make the fall season a success.
The Y hopes to recruit 750 volunteer coaches to support youth teams this season. Parents, grandparents, former athletes LOSE COMMA and community members are invited to get involved, and previous coaching experience isn’t required.
The YMCA provides volunteers with the training and support they need to lead, encourage and positively influence young athletes throughout the season.
For a child, a great coach can make an impact that lasts far beyond the final game.
