All 10 of San Antonio’s City Council seats will be elected on the May 3 ballot.
Particularly heated races this year are taking place in District 4 and District 5, where longtime Councilmembers Adriana Rocha Garcia (D4) and Melissa Cabello Havrda (D6) jumped over to the crowded mayor race to replace Mayor Ron Nirenberg.
Two more rare council openings exist in District 8 and District 9, where Councilmen Manny Pelaez (D8) and John Courage (D9) are termed out after eight years. Both are also running for mayor.
When filing closed on Feb. 14, a total of 60 candidates had signed up to run across 10 seats.
Council members elected for the first time this year will be eligible for two four-year terms, thanks to term changes voters approved in November. Incumbents seeking reelection this year are also running for a four-year term, but their eligibility is still capped at a total of eight years.
The job pays $70,200 per year.
