San Antonio’s Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival has a new home in St. Paul Square.
This year’s one-night immersive extravaganza extends from East Commerce to the Alamodome and boasts a roster that covers just about every medium in the contemporary arts including installation, live musical and dance performances, as well as film, poetry and aerial acrobatics. The free, all-ages event takes place Oct. 19 from 6 p.m. to midnight.
“The new location at St. Paul Square pays homage to our arts and entertainment history,” said Yadhira Lozano, the festival’s executive director. “This is where world-renowned musicians performed during segregation and beyond to diverse audiences. It united everyone with their love of music. We hope to unite all art lovers and supporters for one spectacular night and celebrate life together.”
The historically Black neighborhood has a storied history as a transportation and business hub and ties to legendary musicians like Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino and B.B. King. Today, The Espee’s Mission Revival architecture is the visual focal point of what is now designated as an entertainment district — one that caters to dining, dancing and enjoying cocktails until the wee hours of the night. Luminaria and its community partners seek to breathe more life back into the area.
The festival partnered with neighboring businesses in St. Paul Square, the Alamodome and UTSA Athletics, who will be hosting their annual homecoming game at the Alamodome the same night as Luminaria.

“Urban-15 will be lighting up the Alamodome with lasers and a spectacular dance and drum showcase,” Lozano said.
Lozano also highlighted the Lionstale Collective’s The Legacy of Rhythm, an art exhibition about the Black music history of St. Paul Square and San Antonio, and performances like Lechuza Guide to the Lone Star State, a play by Marisela Barrera.
Tejano legend Shelly Lares, along with a roster of rising artists under her record label, Shell Shock Records 3, will be performing at the festival’s opening ceremony, Lozano added, and Cirque Aria will be demonstrating acrobatics and doing interactive activities with the public throughout the event.
The more than 100 featured artists will be joined by local art and food vendors for Saturday’s festivities. Admission to the festival is free with VIP badges available. Visit the Luminaria website for details.
