Though the weather hasn’t changed much, the calendar rolls on into October, which means it’s spooky season in San Antonio.
The Haunted Dollhouse Museum scares up its First Fright Friday Halloween Kick Off Block Party, 8 p.m.-midnight. The event is free, and the venue promises a real haunted house, costume contest, Monster Mash dance-off, tarot reading and pumpkin bake-off to get you in the Halloween spirit.
The San Antonio Black International Film Festival (SABIFF) runs Friday through Sunday morning in various locations, including a Saturday evening Cinema Under the Stars screening in Lockwood-Dignowity Park of Texas filmmaker Rock White’s The Beautiful Struggle. Free with registration.
For the ghost-averse, head to Galeria E.V.A. on our city’s lovely South Side on Saturday for the free public screening of George Garza Jr.’s music video — filmed at the Rathskeller Bar — for a song off his brand new album Enjoy the Ride. Screening starts at 6:30 p.m. with a Q&A afterward.
Also Saturday, stop by Chestnut Street between noon and 9 p.m. for a massive street art activation by the San Antonio Street Art Initiative (SASAI), with 15 new large-scale murals in the works, food trucks and vendors. It’ll be a real street art party adding to what SASAI boasts as the “Largest Outdoor Gallery In Texas.”
October is also Oktoberfest season! Beethoven Männerchor Halle und Garten raises its beer-filled steins the next two weekends. Enjoy polka dancing, tappings of the keg and sing-alongs, with plenty of German beer flowing.
Then Monday evening, San Antonio Report Managing Editor Laura Garcia moderates a discussion with Emmy award-winning journalist Paola Ramos for the San Antonio Book Festival‘s Get Lit series. The free event begins at 7 p.m. with a book signing afterward.
And Tuesday evening at the Estancia Del Norte, the Report co-hosts a night of debates with the Greater San Antonio Chamber with candidates for Texas House Districts 118 and 121. Editor-in-Chief Leigh Munsil and reporter Andrea Drusch will moderate starting at 6:15 p.m., and interested readers are encouraged to submit a question in advance during registration or by email at hello@sareport.org.
