The San Antonio Independent School District board of trustees has set a community meeting to discuss the possible sale of a 2.3-acre tract of land on Camaron Street to make way for a proposed minor league baseball stadium.
The community meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Oct. 7 at the district board room, 514 W. Quincy.
The discussion comes after residents of the Soap Factory apartment complex, which is set to be demolished by the proposed $160 million ballpark, made an impassioned appeal to the school board during a public comment session of a Sept. 16 board meeting.
Residents asked trustees to join their cause in opposing the project, urging the district to “play hardball” and “uplift tenant demands” with the San Antonio Missions ownership and developer Weston Urban, which owns the downtown apartment complex.
The Oct. 7 date is just one day before Bexar County Commissioners are scheduled to meet. An MOU for the downtown stadium is likely to be discussed, but the agenda for that meeting has not been finalized.
Both meetings push up against a reported Oct. 15 deadline set by the MLB for the new ownership to show the league that there is a plan in place to build a new stadium for the Missions.
If the sale moves forward, the stadium project will be funded by the team’s owners and through tax revenues generated from private development in the area and the Houston Street Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ).
It is still unclear which entity would be the purchaser of the tract, if approved.
San Antonio Report reporters Andrea Drusch and Shari Biediger contributed to this report.
Correction: This story has been updated to correctly state that the proposed purchaser of the tract is not yet determined.
