Laura Garcia, formerly a news editor at the Texas Tribune, has been named the next managing editor of the nonprofit San Antonio Report.
Garcia will join the Report’s senior management team on June 24.
She takes on the role previously held by Wendy Lane Cook, who accepted a position as deputy managing editor of The Dispatch in Washington, D.C. in March.
“I can’t wait to get started,” Garcia said. “Journalism is crucial to our democracy and good reporting seeks to expose the truths that those in power attempt to hide.
“The public must have access to quality journalism that is not only timely and interesting, but accurate and relevant to their lives so that they can make informed decisions,” she added. “I’m honored to step into this leadership role and help the [San Antonio Report] continue to bring important news to our readers.”
Garcia joined the Tribune in 2022 after spending a decade reporting on the health care industry and how it affects South Texans.
A Cotulla native, she previously worked as a business health care reporter at the San Antonio Express-News and has had bylines at the Victoria Advocate, The Roanoke Times, Corpus Christi Caller-Times and the Longview News-Journal.
Garcia actively serves multiple journalism organizations locally and nationally. She is the current vice president of the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists, a regional coordinator for Texas and Oklahoma for the Society of Professional Journalists, and a current senior fellow for the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism.
“The journalists in our nonprofit newsroom spend each day reporting and documenting San Antonio stories to help our readers live more engaged, informed lives,” Editor-in-Chief Leigh Munsil said. “Laura Garcia’s experience covering South Texas, her news judgment and dedication to shaping young journalists will supercharge our day-to-day work for even more impact.
“I can’t wait to see what we’ll accomplish with Laura crafting our stories and coaching our staff to do the kind of journalistic work that truly changes communities.”
The San Antonio Report is a local online news enterprise with a year-round calendar of civic engagement events and a full-time staff of 17 journalists and nonprofit professionals.
