Tejeda, age 71, has served as a constable for Bexar County since 1992. He started his career as a Bexar County Deputy Sheriff. This year he fended off a challenger from his own party in the Democratic primary.
Please tell voters about yourself.
I began my career as a Texas Certified Peace Officer in 1978 as a Bexar County Deputy Sheriff. Throughout my tenure, 15 years with the Sheriff’s Office and as elected-Constable since 1992, my experience and training includes being a police instructor and mentor for underprivileged children. I have demonstrated genuine commitment to the education and development of students and the community by implementing special interest programs.
Since 1992, I have served the Bexar County Constable’s Office with integrity and distinction. Throughout my professional and public life I has served more than 45 years of continuous tenure in law enforcement.
I attended Columbia Heights and Collier Elementary, Southcross Junior High, Harlandale High School, San Antonio College, Prairie View University and Southwest Texas State University.
I’m married to Rebecca Mireles-Tejeda, and we have two sons, Ruben James and Gabriel Jesse. The family are parishioners of Mission San Jose. Mrs. Rebecca Mireles Tejeda passed in July of 2022 after a 7 year fight with cancer.
How do you plan to address the increasing workload constables face in a
growing county?
I plan to address these matters in a practical manner with the assistance of our County
Judge Peter Sakai and Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores and the remainder of the Commissioners Court. I will build on to what I have developed in the past years of multi- tasking the workload and diverse training my Deputy Constable’s to engage in every facet of the workings of this office.
All of my Deputies can execute all of the current Civil Process that we are receiving from the 57 different courts in Bexar County, to include the District Attorneys Office, Protective Orders, Texas Attorney General Child Support and any Out of County Civil Process.
Currently we are continuing seeking the addition of Deputy Constables to maintain the 95% to 97% execution rate pertaining to the Civil Process Service. I hope to have a suitable amount of Deputy Constables, around 30 to 35, to continue the high standard of service to my constituents of Precinct 1.
Many would state that it would be a burden on the tax payer to add additional deputies. During a recent 5 year period, my office brought in over $12.9 million dollars in revenue for Bexar County and our operating budget during the 5 years was $7.8 million dollars.
Why did you decide to seek this office? And why did you decide to run
under the party affiliation that you chose?
I was raised and lived in Precinct 1 all of my life. My endeavors in the current office that I hold are steadfast in the grass roots of this community. My family is my community of Precinct 1. As long as the constituents of Precinct 1 keep supporting me and the work that I do for the Community of Precinct 1, I plan to continue to run for office. I have been a Democrat all of my life.
How do you solicit input and feedback from residents in your precinct?
My office has an open door policy to the constituents of Precinct 1. It has been this way since my first time in office as the Constable of Precinct 1. If you walk in or make an appointment I will do my very best to serve you and address any issue that you may have and to the best of my ability. If I am not available, my Command Staff will assist any and all persons that come to my office to seek assistance in any matter.
