After nearly two years of construction, the San Antonio Spurs’ new practice facility at The Rock at La Cantera, is set to open for training camp next week.
Spurs executives hosted an orientation session at the Victory Capital Performance Center for the media Wednesday, giving sportscasters, camera crews and reporters a chance to see the gleaming 90,000-square-foot facility firsthand.
R.C. Buford, Spurs Sports & Entertainment’s CEO, led a tour along with Phil Cullen, senior director of basketball operations and organizational development for Spurs Sports & Entertainment.

Construction began in November 2021 on the state-of-the-art Spurs training center, located in the former rock quarry in far Northwest San Antonio. It is the largest mass timber building in Texas and the first built for American professional sports, according to the Spurs organization.
The facility holds player lounges, men’s and women’s coach locker rooms, a wellness room with space for nursing moms, hydrotherapy pools, a team auditorium and a dining area for player meals.

In addition to the Spurs’ new practice gym, The Rock at La Cantera also includes a research center dedicated to studying human performance, a 22-acre green space with trails, a 7.5-acre dog park, and the Frost Plaza — a public outdoor event plaza with a restaurant expected to open next year.
When fully complete, the development also will feature a half-million square feet of restaurant, retail and commercial space. An affinity club for Spurs fans and members of the community with exclusive access to the training enter is expected to open in early 2024.
Bexar County contributed $15 million toward The Rock project and in exchange got a fully developed public park space next from the Spurs and the USAA Real Estate Co., which rebranded as Affinius Capital earlier this year. The San Antonio City Council also agreed to contribute up to $17 million in tax rebates for the new development and practice facility.
Following a preseason that starts Oct. 13, the Spurs’ regular season will kick off Oct. 25 with a home opener against the Dallas Mavericks.
