Will this be the year San Antonio finally wins its first James Beard Award?

Five local chefs and two restaurants are in the running for awards considered the Oscars of the food industry. Two chefs in nearby Seguin also have been nominated for James Beard Awards.

The James Beard Foundation on Wednesday announced that Mixtli is a semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurant, Anacacho Coffee & Cantina was nominated for Best New Restaurant and Tavel Bristol-Joseph of Nicosi was named a semifinalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker.

David Kirkland and Ernest Servantes of Burnt Bean Co. in Seguin were named semifinalists for Outstanding Chef.

The foundation also announced three local semifinalists for Best Chef: Texas:

  • Sue Kim of The Magpie
  • Francisco Estrada and Lizzeth Martinez of Naco Mexican
  • Emil Oliva of Leche de Tigre

Finalists will be announced on March 31. Winners will be named in Chicago on June 15.

The 36th annual James Beard Awards “recognize exceptional talent and achievement in the culinary arts, hospitality, media and broader food system.”
