Angela and Rick Martinez moved to Southtown in 2000, not too many years after the neighborhood name itself came into existence. They chose the neighborhood because of its walkablility, friendly residents and funky old houses. Rick walked to his office at Parsons across from the Majestic every day until the city’s B-cycle program came along. Now he can pedal to work. They owned the video store Planet of the Tapes for a few years and subsequently parlayed that effort into Slab Cinema, featuring free outdoor movie screenings at several nearby venues. “What I love most about the neighborhood is the wonderful sense of community we find here,” Angela said. “It’s a great place to raise our kids, Wiley, 9, and Felice, 7.”
