Two of the top three U.S. women’s tennis players are scheduled to compete in the Fed Cup World Group playoff between the United States and Switzerland on April 20, the U.S. Tennis Association announced Wednesday.
Eighth-ranked Sloane Stephens and 14th-ranked Madison Keys will lead the U.S. team, along with No. 36 Sofia Kenin, No. 74 Jessica Pegula, and No. 78 Jennifer Brady. Kathy Rinaldi is captain of the U.S. Fed Cup team. For Switzerland, No. 81 Viktorija Golubic, No. 112 Timea Bacsinzsky, No. 144 Conny Perrin and No. 183 Ylena In-Albon will be competing at the two-day event at Freeman Coliseum.
Play will begin at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. On the first day, each country’s best player will compete against its opponent’s second best in two singles matches. Sunday will then pit opposing players of the same rank against each other in two reverse singles matches, and if necessary a fifth and decisive doubles match.
The exact matchup of players will be drawn at an official ceremony at the Alamo on April 19 at 11 a.m.
The U.S. is 8-0 in Fed Cup competition against Switzerland, but the two nations have not met since 1993. The winner of the playoff returns to the top-level World Group to compete for the Fed Cup title in 2020.
This is the first time that Texas has hosted the Fed Cup, which is the women’s equivalent of the international Davis Cup competition.
The matches will be played on a temporary hardcourt at Freeman Coliseum. Tickets for the Fed Cup are available here.
