Something Monday, the Rivard Report’s social bike ride, will take us to the Eastside to the Carver Community Cultural Center to learn the history and basics of Capoeira.

Capoeira, an African-Brazilian art form that blends dance, martial arts, and acrobatics, was brought by African slaves to Brazil to disguise their practice of martial arts as a dance form. They literally used Capoeira to fight for their freedom.

Our instructor will be Michael Pleasants of Capoeira Luanda & Ilê Bahia de San Antonio, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting African-Brazilian arts in San Antonio. Pleasants  has been practicing Capoeira for 16 years, and teaching it for 10 years.

We’ll meet up at the B-Cycle station located at the San Antonio Museum of Art (200 W. Jones Ave) and depart at 6:30 p.m. for the ride to the Carver Center (226 North Hackberry). It’s a short, three-mile round trip with relatively easy terrain – from B-cycles to road bikes, all are welcome.

Afterward, we will meet up at The Brooklynite for some hand crafted cocktails and conversation.

Hope to see you there.
