Drive a Senior Logo

Drive A Senior SA is a new recruitment campaign dedicated to finding volunteer drivers to help senior citizens get around Bexar County, funded by United Way. In Bexar County alone, there are hundreds of seniors currently on a waiting list for transportation services. There is an urgent need for volunteer drivers, now.

Drive A Senior SA is a collaborative effort between three local nonprofits that currently help seniors including Southwest Outreach For Older People, Jefferson Outreach and Northeast Senior Assistance. Even with these three nonprofits there are many seniors on a waiting list.

This 2015-2016 campaign is immediately recruiting kindhearted volunteers to drive local senior citizens to doctor’s appointments, pick up medications, assist with grocery shopping and more. According to a December 2014 Census Bureau Report, mobility was identified as the most common disability among older Americans; specifically difficulty with independent living, such as visiting a doctor’s office or grocery shopping.

“There’s nothing I enjoy more than working with seniors, hearing their stories and learning life lessons, “ said Donald Kearney, a current volunteer driver. “I am grateful I get to spend time with the seniors. With over 120 people on the waiting list, I hope others volunteer as drivers to help improve the lives of seniors.”

Volunteers can drive a senior regularly whether it be weekly or monthly and we encourage building a long-term relationship. If you are concerned about gas, don’t worry. Mileage is reimbursed for those who turn in a monthly mileage sheet.

Drive A Senior SA’s mission is to make a real difference in someone’s life. Volunteer today and be more than just a driver, be a friend.
