The Peanut Factory Lofts, located at 939 S. Frio, is bringing life to a previously neglected area in downtown San Antonio’s near Westside. Originally a Peanut Factory built in 1912, the apartment complex will feature the unique floor plan of the forgotten factory, including the four, 60-foot tall silos. Yes, you can live in the silos and the view at the top – the penthouse – is unbelievable.

We were fortunate enough to take a tour of the Peanut Factory Lofts recently. Walking through the gate, our eyes were pulled in all different directions. The glimmering pool, the tall silos and the beautifully painted buildings. There will be a total of 102 residential units on the 130,000 square foot site. Floor plans include flats, lofts, studios and the silo floor plans that we’ve been dreaming of since we saw the renderings.

Many of the units are currently available for leasing, however, the silos estimated date of completion is June. The penthouse, located at the top of the silos, will be going for a little under $5,000/month. We’re digging deep into our pockets, but sadly, we don’t think we’ll be able to afford it. Perhaps we’ll just have to befriend the owners so we can wake up to the stunning view of downtown San Antonio, coffee and croissant in hand.

The silos that we viewed still had graffiti on the walls from the days they were abandoned. It was quite beautiful actually, the way the graffiti intertwined with the brick walls, and the sunlight seemed to hit the colors just right. I spoke with one of the developers, and she said they are still trying to decide what to do with the interior of the silos. They may paint over all of the graffiti, or leave sections of it throughout the walls to add more character to the rooms.

With easy access to the UTSA Downtown Campus as well as many hotspots for dining and entertainment, these lofts are perfectly situated. The Peanut Factory Lofts won two awards from the San Antonio Business Journal in 2014 – Best Overhaul and Best Residential Development. We’d like to nominate them for most unique apartment complex in San Antonio.

We have to know – what do you think of the Peanut Factory Lofts?

  1. Nice to see the urban renewal. Rents are kind of pricey, though. You can rent a 2 or 3 bedroom house near downtown for less than what they want for a 1 bedroom apartment.

  2. Nice to see that area start to redevelop. It’s still a little sketchy on that side of the highway and rents are pushing the envelope for a development that’s in an untested area.

  3. What are the rents only a few short blocks away? Super high end seems so out of place. I remember the area when there were junk yards between the peanut factory and the highway.

  4. We just moved in here last month and we are loving it so far. The apartments are very nice and comfortable. Location is great i feel like im in the middle of everything. 35 is less than 3 min away, easy access to I10 and 90. The newly renovated HEB off nogalitos is 5 min away. King William is a straight shot 5 min drive to the best restaurants and bars. I agree rent is high but I have looked everywhere and they are all about the same downtown. Peanut factory had the best and only deal that included cable and internet. Not 1 other apt complex downtown offered that. Peanut factory has so many options, You have your basic but very nice apts, lofts, townhomes and silos. My boyfriend is from Houston (huge adjustment) and loving the location with a short drive to everything. The gated community is of course great but the SAPD headquaters is less than 5 min away so that’s a plus. I grew up 10 min away and remember seeing this huge old building and never would have thought it could be what it is now. Overall the peanut factory is a great historic renovated addition to my community and glad i can be apart of it ; )
