The first deaths linked to the new coronavirus in the U.S. happened last week, and San Antonio is one of several cities across the globe grappling with the implications of the outbreak, in jeopardy of becoming a global pandemic with further unmitigated spread.
After surfacing in a Chinese seafood and poultry market late last year, the virus, formally known as COVID-19, has reached 73 countries, but of the thousands of cases reported globally so far, 90 percent are in China — and mostly in one province.
So far, U.S. officials confirmed nine deaths and more than 100 cases, 11 of which are in San Antonio, with patients receiving treatment at the Texas Center for Infectious Disease.
Local health officials continue to stress that the risk of an outbreak in San Antonio remains low, but fear and anxiety about the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, has persisted throughout the city, prompting business closures and purchase limits for disinfecting sprays, disinfecting wipes, and hand sanitizer.
