Dr. Jaime R. Garza, a San Antonio native, was the first in his family to graduate from high school who then earned a four-year athletic scholarship to play Division I football for Tulane University. He then went on to graduate from dental school followed by medical school where he earned a degree in plastic surgery. As a member of the Texas State University System Board of Regents since 2011, and its twice-elected current chair, Garza has led the oldest higher education system in Texas to great accomplishments, including significant increases in minority recruitment and college completion rates.
