IDEA Public Schools became the first major San Antonio school district to close campuses through the end of the school year.
In a Thursday announcement, the charter school network said all IDEA campuses in Texas are working to continue distance learning through the end of the 2019-20 year, but that school buildings would remain closed except for meals and child care.
“We will continue to monitor the situation throughout the summer and hope to reopen our school buildings in August,” the charter network said in a statement.
The traditional public school districts in San Antonio are closed through May 1 and plan to have students return to campus on May 4 after Gov. Greg Abbott ordered all Texas schools closed through those dates in a press conference on Tuesday.
In San Antonio, IDEA operates 12 hubs around the city, with two schools at each location. The network plans to open an additional two hubs next fall. The San Antonio schools’ academic calendar had class ending on May 22, just three weeks after Abbott’s mandated closure order. At the Tuesday press conference, Abbott said the closures could be extended if necessary.
More than 13,600 students are enrolled in IDEA schools throughout the San Antonio area, according to the charter network’s website.
