In response to an urgent need for food brought on by crippling snow and ice storms, the San Antonio Food Bank is making plans to distribute food to thousands of people starting Friday.

More than 500 volunteers are needed to support seven mega-mobile distribution events throughout the city.

“Our community is hurting,” stated Eric Cooper, president and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank. “We have been meeting the emergency food needs all week for the homeless and those in shelters across our community. Now it’s time to reach those in homes through our distributions and home deliveries.”

At this weekend’s mega-mobile distribution events, the food bank will give out 100,000 tons of food and water.

For nearly a year, the food bank has been supporting an increased demand for its services since last March when the coronavirus pandemic and resulting economic impact doubled the number of people requesting help. The nonprofit has hosted more than 1,000 mobile distributions in that time.

Each of the seven distribution events this weekend will provide 100 pounds of food for 1,000 to 2,000 households.

To volunteer, register at safoodbank.org/volunteer.

Residents are urged to register for one of these seven mega distribution sites at safoodbank.org/cvresponse/getfood. But those who cannot pre-register will not be turned away, food bank officials said.
