The Daughters of the Republic of Texas are in negotiations with Centro de Artes, the educational and cultural arts center established by Texas A&M University-San Antonio in the former Museo Alameda in 2012, to house its Library Collection in the historic building.
The DRT has done excellent work preserving the Alamo and has compiled an extensive library collection over the years. But a number of scholars and historians believe that the Alamo history excludes the stories and perspectives of the Tejano and indigenous people.
For this reason and others, many in the Latino arts community feel that the DRT takeover of the Centro de Artes building would conflict with the institution’s mission, “to facilitate an understanding and appreciation of Latino arts and cultures and their influences on the United States, through exhibitions and related educational programming for a variety of audiences.”
