Do you know a San Antonian that has dedicated themselves to the advancement of human rights, nonviolence, or social equity? Somebody that embodies the spirit and legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.? Chances are, they don’t self-identify as such. The City’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is now accepting nominations to honor those contemporary individuals and organizations that approach incarnation of MLK.
Applications for the three awards are due on Friday, Dec. 11. Find brief descriptions and links to forms for the awards below.
The awards will be presented during the 2016 commemoration, “King Week San Antonio: Uniting Communities to Advance Humanity,” in Pittman-Sullivan Park on Jan. 18, 2016. San Antonio’s MLK March to the park is again expected to be one of the largest – if not the largest – in the U.S.
King Week will feature several educational and cultural events throughout the city and “the Commission is also focusing on significantly increasing scholarship giving for local students,” according to a news release.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Achievement Award
“Recognizes an individual whose record of personal achievement in the community reflects a strong commitment to human rights, equal educational opportunity, and economic well-being for all – principles that embody the vision of Dr. King.”
The Baha’i Unity of Humanity Award
“Recognizes members of the community whose lives embody the legacy of Dr. King.”
The Rev. Dr. R.A. Callies, Sr. Courage Award
“Recognizes an individual, organization or group whose record exhibits the courage of the Rev. Dr. R.A. Callies, Sr., one of the local founders of the annual MLK, Jr. March, to advance the principles of nonviolence and represent the values and human equalities of Dr. King.”
